CUT
Refers to the shape of the diamond. Round diamonds, also known as the round brilliant cut, are the standards in the industry. Anything other than round is considered a fancy cut.
Did you know...When it comes to round diamonds, cut has an entirely different meaning.
COLOR
Refers to how white or not white a diamond appears. The closer a diamond appears colorless, the more rare, thus more valuable. Coloring grading begins with the alphabet letter D (colorless) and ends at Z (yellow/brown in color).
Did you know...Fancy colored diamonds (yellows, pinks, blues, etc) are graded on an entirely different scale than white diamonds.
CLARITY
Refers to the natural imperfections either located inside a diamond or located on the surface of a diamond. Less imperfections the more rare, thus more valuable.
CARAT
Refers to the unit of measure used for weighing diamonds and gemstones. There are 100 points in one carat. A diamond weighing 1.50 carats would be considered a "carat and a half".
CERTIFICATION
Known today as the 5th "C"
Refers to the independent gemological labratory of which the diamond was graded. Two of the most well known in the industry are GIA and EGL. While both are reputable, there are grading differences present between the two.
